Live a peaceful lifestyle rooted in sustainability

Georgia offers many options for those seeking a peaceful lifestyle rooted in self-sustainability and self-sufficiency. The Atlanta Metropolitan Area is full of growers supplying fresh produce and grass-fed meat to restaurants throughout Atlanta and other nearby communities. From homesteading to urban farming, there are many destinations around Atlanta that promise private living spaces and proximity to nature. There are also innovative developments such as Serenbe, which offer a 21st-century update to the traditional agrarian lifestyle.

The Sustainable and Locally-Sourced Lifestyle

Many businesses in Atlanta and beyond lend support to local agricultural ventures. KarmaFarm is a family-run restaurant in Atlanta’s upscale Buckhead district that sources all of its food from local growers. KarmaFarm also gives back to the community by donating one meal for each meal sold to charities such as No Kid Hungry. Farm Burger takes a similarly socially and environmentally conscious approach to the burgers they sell in several locations in Atlanta, Decatur, and Dunwoody. All burgers are prepared using 100% grass-fed beef from nearby farms. Farm Burger is also committed to using all the major muscles and cuts in their carcass blends while other parts are utilized for sides, toppings, and tallow butter. Buttermilk Kitchen is a farm-to-table restaurant in North Buckhead serving Southern breakfast and lunch fare prepared exclusively with sustainable local ingredients. Serenbe is a unique community surrounding a historic farmhouse 30 miles southwest of Atlanta. With a name that means “be serene”, Serenbe combines residential hamlets with a lifestyle centered on fresh air and fresh food. Covering 1,200 acres—70 percent of which is dedicated agricultural land—each of Serenbe’s four hamlets has a different focus. The artsy hamlet of Selborne hosts artists in residency programs and contains the Serenbe Playhouse. Other hamlets focus on health and wellness, education, and agriculture. Amenities within Serenbe include farm-to-table restaurants, a café, a bookstore, a farm co-op, and shops. All of Serenbe’s communities are connected by nature trails. Scottsdale Farms in North Fulton is a working farm with a garden center and a café that hosts special events and educational programs throughout the year. Neighbors Feed & Seed Supply Co. in Smyrna sells a wide selection of farm-fresh vegetables and animal feed and vegetables. They also offer services such as carpentry and small engine repair.

Eat Local, Eat Real Food

Farmers’ markets around the Atlanta Metropolitan Area allow growers to sell produce and residents to enjoy the bounties of local agricultural production. Peachtree Road Farmers Market runs every Saturday morning from March to December in Atlanta’s Buckhead district. All produce sold at Morningside Farmers Market is required to be certified completely organic. This farmers’ market takes place each Saturday morning all year-round in Atlanta’s Morningside-Lenox Park neighborhood. Neighbors Seed & Feed Farmers Market is also held every Saturday at Smyrna’s Neighbors Seed & Feed Supply Co. Castleberry Hills Farmers Market is held each Monday from 4 PM to 7 PM in the Downtown Atlanta neighborhood of Castleberry Hills. To Atlanta’s northeast, the suburban city of Brookhaven hosts a farmers' market every Saturday morning from April to November. East Point to the southwest of Atlanta hosts its own farmers' market on Wednesday evenings. Serenbe Farms invites residents of Serenbe and the wider area to buy farm-fresh produce at a farmers’ market held each Saturday morning between 9 AM and 12 PM.

A variety of school districts cover different communities around the Atlanta Metropolitan Area.
